Purchase question.Future Upgrades.

  • Hi there. I am new to the forum and to panoramic photography in general.
I saved up to buy a Nodal Ninja and Leveller and have now got them. I have been practising the photography and stitching stages.

I have planned to buy KR Pano when I get up and running which I now am and I have a couple of questions before I purchase:

    1. I intend to purchase the Unlimited domain license and I was wondering whether or not I will get newer versions for free, at a reduced cost or at full price. All of your updates are exciting and I will want them but could not afford to buy them every time. How are updates priced?
    2. I am using PTgui for my stitching which I am now used to and have a great workflow with it. However, at the moment it only supports spherical output and reading the forum I have seen it mentioned a few times that better results are achieved using cubical images. What software/workflow do you recommend?
    3. If I convert a panorama which was created spherically to a cubical one will there be any benefit in KRpano?

Thanks in advance for your help. I look forward to developing with KRpano.

  • Hi,

    1. updates are free, just download the latest version.
    2. there are a tools out there for converting sphericals to cubicals, but personally I use my own tool for converting - ktransform, there is also a droplet (SPHERE to CUBE) included
    3. this depends on the pano/motive, if you have many straight lines and want perfect nadir/zenith areas, a maximum possible performance in flash 10 then use cubicals, but for landscape/nature panos, not important nadir/zenith or strong fisheye usage you can also use sphericals.

    best regards,
    Klaus

  • Hi Klaus, thanks for your reply.

I am delighted that updates to KRPano are free and considering that it is by far the best pano viewer out there I feel that it is an amazing deal.
I do have a couple of further questions which I hope you can answer:

    1. Would there be any advantage to stitching my panos in an application that outputs directly to the cubical format rather than using PTgui and then converting spherical to cubical using krtransform or another converter?
    2. I note from some other forum threads that you are close to the next version which include the Flash 10 support. How close are you to releasing this new version? I bet it would be quicker if you didn't have to answer all these questions in the forum!

Thanks again for your help and advice.

  • no there is no advantage of direct output to cubical (I think there is only one app that supports this), stitching and blending can be done better in spherical format (especially when using multiresolution blenders like smartblend or enblend)

I would say very close the most parts are ready now but some other bigger and smaller parts (e.g. updated plugins, documentation, ..) are not finished yet and still need some time, but I'm trying to release a beta version (without plugins, docu) very soon.

(without answering mails and forums it could be done quicker, that's true )

    best regards,
    Klaus

  • Hi Klaus,

Thanks again for your reply. I am pleased that I do not need to change my workflow and having invested in PTgui I wasn't keen on changing but I would have if it would have significantly improved the pano quality.

As for the next version, I eagerly await!

Now I will let you get on with the work.

    Thanks.
