Acropolis Athens Gigapixel Orthoimages and many more

Our last project for Acropolis Restoration Service had to do with gigapixel orthoimages and 3d scans. Everybody is excited with the result. All data are served in amazon s3. Explore Acropolis groundplan gigapixel orthoimages . Click on the lines to explore gigapixel images from the walls.

A very interesting project indeed. The most interesting part lies in the the subject itself (so interesting in terms of history and culture) and the way it has been computerised.

Just a question : is it an aerial visit (balloon, plane, helicopter...) or does it consist in different snap shots taken from Google Earth ? Or from another satellit ?

Whatever your answer, I like it. But I think you can make it still more interesting (hotspots..., descriptions...)

The 1557 images for the groundplan were taken from a metereological balloon at 22,5m height with a digital camera ( 22ΜΡ full frame, 48mm x 36 mm, 5336 x 4008 pixel και lens 45mm) ).
For the walls 2250 images were taken.
Windy weather wasn't really helpful with the shots taken from the balloon.

Helicopters flights are forbidden above acropolis rock.
