360 one shot solutions

Hi,

a client wants a high detailed panorama of an event. detailed enough to see faces of people (imagine 20k people in a stadium). There is a certain moment in the event he wants to capture, so I can't use the regular gigapixel method of shooting 100's of photos and stich them. But as far as I know, there are not good 1 shot 360 solutions with high resolution.

I can only think of one solution; multiple camera's stuck on a tripod and then combine the shutter in 1 remote control. Does anyone have experience with such solutions?

Alsoo, does anyone recall the name of the RC helicopter with a 360 degree radius, stabilisation, gps and mountheads for simple camera's. I once saw a company that could fly a RC helicopter with 10-16 simple cybershot camera's and take a 360 degree photo with just one shot.

I would use a D800 + 16mm fisheye and take 6 vertical shots! Either way it would be very complicated with a single shot!

Yeah, the problem is, It needs to be single shot. All the people in the audience would cheer at a certain point, and I need to capture that cheering moment in 1 shot, well enough that their faces can be recognized. Since one camera one shot solutions are too lowres, I probally need to deploy multiple camera's and connect the shutters to a RC button, then shoot the nadir/zenith later. I saw existing solutions who did this, but can't recall the name. Ladybug uses this technique to film, but thats more then I need.

Forget about those pre-built one shot solutions as their picture quality is really bad. (already tried them).

There is one solution that is perfect but it is very expensive and you'll have to build it yourself.

It involves:

3 cameras, 3 lenses, 3 tripod heads, a base plate, and a custom 3 way wired remote control. You can buy the setup listed below or you can build it yourself from scratch. The 60 degree tilt is not necessary if you are using a wide fisheye. This setting will take the zenith fully, and leave a very little nadir blindspot which you can photograph later.

I was about to build it but the shipping cost from italy for the plate was too high, and my camera supplier wasnt able to deliver on 3 used cameras which he had promised etc... so i didnt try it, however i found some websites that had tried it successfully. Let me know if you need more info.

Hm, but 20k people is quite a lot.
Can you determine the final resolution you need?
Starting from there you could tell how many cameras with which lens you need.
Doesn't necessarily need to be DSLRs, an array of decent point and shoot will also work.

Ya I would start with figuring out what output size you want. That will quickly tell you what setups can be used. Also i would get a confirmation on what "recognizable" means to your clients.

Hi,

Yeah I figured out I wouldnt need a gigapixel perhaps. So I was looking at 10-16mm lenses. For example the Sigma 8-16mm or the Canon EF 8-15MM F/4.0L FISHEYE USM.

Is there a website which can calculate the maximum resolution you could achieve to cover 360 degrees when zoomed in maximum. Or perhaps the FOV given the mm of the lens and camera?

I'd reckon I need about 20.000 -25.000 x 10.000 - 125000 px
