Acropolis of Athens - Virtual Tour - Gigapixel Imaging

Dear all,

we are very pleased to offer you some good news from Greece... In harsh times like this, we try to keep our work going but it isn't always easy...

So finally, after hard and creative work, here it is : The Virtual Tour of the Acropolis of Athens

We worked for about a year at acquiring the images, post-processing and developing the application, communicating with archaeologists and other
stakeholders from the Greek Ministry of Culture & Tourism.
This virtual tour is meant to be an educational tool but also serve scientists working at the restoration of the monuments.

We exploited the krpano viewer to the maximum (more then 10.000 lines of script) and implemented a lot of functionality. Credits to Klaus and the community !!
Read more about the application at the case studies section of our Homepage.

Feel free to ask anything, we will try to give feedback but also share some usable code if there is any interest...

Thank you people,
we hope you like it and learn more about the Acropolis Monuments,

the orbitlab team

Hai,

Very Nice!!!

I love it.

I was wondering how you did the menu on the right side.
The detail views and the all views.
I would like to see that code.
Is that possible?
I'm afraid it's all javascipt though.. :-|

Great and honourfull job!

I would like to see the pano's on a higher resolution.
But i'm shure you have a good reason to do it like this.

Cheers
Tuur *thumbsup*

Hey Tuur,

thanks for your kind words!

Stay tuned! Your request is beeing processed! *smile*

I'm preparing an extensive post about the two menus on the right side...
It's mainly krpano script with a little straightforward javascript ;-) .
I will explain everything you need to implement this fairly easy in your own apps!

Hi,

very nice tour with some great Interface ideas! I especially like that everything is so customizable to fit the users needs and interests. And the gigapixel-images/panos are stunning detailed. Congratulation to you and your team for such a great work *thumbup*

I´m looking forward to your "extensive post", about how you made the left textbox!

Best regards
Nupsi

Hi Nupsi,

thank you very much. You get the point ! Interaction Design was given great care at the development. I think technologies are good and fancy, but they also have to be accessible for the user/visitor...

Well, about the Textbox :

This is made using javascript. We used the "jquery UI plugin" for the virtual tour layout. See an example here : http://layout.jquery-dev.net/demos/container.html

*attention* I think this framework is very helpful for creating virtual tours. Check it out, it's very customizable! *attention*

Best regards
alex

Accordion Menus

After request from Tuur I started working on a post about the Accordion Menus on the right side of the Virtual Tour.

Wouldn't it be much more efficient if we make an easy customizable plugin out of it ?

I guess it would be much easier to implement, especially for people without strong scripting skills...

What do you think ?

Yeah,
that would be great,
but i like to study the code aswell, and maybe edit it for my self a bit..

So i say both.

Cheers,
Tuur *thumbsup*

Dear Tuur,

this will be an XML plugin so you'll have the opportunity to study the code and make your own adjustments.

Giving plain (copy-paste), uncommented code isn't something I like to do, cause it's often unusable and surely unprofessional.

Please be patient. The result will make us all happy.

Thanx!

Hi imge,

no at the current stage there are no plans for an iOS version.
The budget was very (very) small and in terms of deployment we stick at the basics, meaning the web...
Maybe we can get additional funding and expand the interoperability. Let's wait and see...

imge,

you are right. Mobile compatibilty is really poor...

how would you reproduce the hover effect in an ipad device ?

Elliminate it completely ?

*confused*

yes,

'just' build and develop a device dedicated version that does and show the same in a different way ;-)

easy words, hard job

Cheers,
Tuur *thumbsup*

Tuur,

check out the Erechtheon - N Porch Gigapixel.

I would say resolution is unfortunately also a parameter of the available budget...

accordion menu plugin

Hi all,

this is alex from the orbitlab team.

The accordion menu used in this virtual tour is available as a free xml plugin, customizable to your needs.
Check it out here, very easy to implement :
