How can I display the navigation buttons outside of the image ?

what do you mean with outside?

Outside the krpano viewer somewhere on the html page?
That's not possible of course, but the krpano elements (like navigation buttons) are rendered by the krpano viewer itself.

There would be only this possible:

• Either define a custom <area> only for the pano image (inside the krpano viewer) and move your button via parent="STAGE" out of this area.
  
• Or define custom buttons via html on your page and use the krpano Javascript Interface for interacting with krpano.

how about having a coloured bar/strip on the edge with the navigation buttons layered on top? It may look as thought the navigation is off the pano.

another option (depending on the navigation tools) is to have buttons on the html that load other panos via the xml.
