Audio of 360 video starts before image is visible (low bandwidth)

Hi,
we are currently developing a tour which heavily utilizes 360° videos. The tour itself consists of image panos and certain hotspots activate the 360° videos. We noticed that when the bandwidth is very low (about <4Mbit) the video starts playing (and therefore the audio) but the screen stays black. The lower the bandwidth the longer it takes for the image to be displayed. With extremely slow internet it can take up to 15 seconds (most of the videos are about 20 seconds long).

  • Video resolution: 5376x2688 (GoPro Max)
  • Video Codec: H.264 (mp4) and VP9 (webm)
  • Bitrate: ~10Mbit

The problem occurs on MacOS and Windows 10, in both Firefox and Chrome. It can be reproduced by limiting the bandwidth in the developer console. Is there a way to fix this problem without reducing the video resolution or the bitrate?

Any help would be appreciated! *smile*

there no way that you can fix this without reducing the bitrate/resolution of the video unless you can preload the videos
then again it could be your hardware struggling to decode the video

here is a guide for video resolution for common VR hardware:
