yes, locking focus is also critical

hyperfocal refers to the point at which the lens has everything in focus from a given point (say a few feet in front of the lens) to infinity, this is more or less standard pano shooting technique, exact range of focus may differ from pano to pano, but generally speaking you really do not want ANYTHING to change from shot to shot

One more question, how do I do the stitching if I'm close to a wall and a large portion of the panoramic is a blank white wall? It doesn't stitch those together well because it can't find control points on an entirely white canvas.

That's another reason why you need a (wider lens+SLR). Something 100-200 degrees FOV. With that wide of an image, there will almost always be something for control points.
Otherwise, you need a robotic spherical head that can shoot accurate enough to use a stitching template. Or you can drag and jimmy the image into place with the ptgui editor.
Left click drag moves the image into place and right click drag rotates it.

i didn't know that trick, thanks sacha :)

dex, stitching large blank areas is always tough, thats why fisheyes are so popular :)

btw, dont worry at all about the curvy distortion in a fisheye lens, this is straightened out by the stitching and display apps in the final pano

I didn't either, I was just thinking it was a needed feature and was going to request it, but I figured I'd check first to see if it wasn't already there!

Beauty. You guys are a huge help, I'm currently trying to convince my dad to ship me out his Nikon D70 that he doesn't use anymore. Last I checked he had 7 or 8 Nikons, maybe he'll be nice enough to give me one!

D70 is a fine camera for panos, i used to use one when it 1st came out -

you will also ideally want to put a fisheye lens on it, cheapest option is probably the samyang 8mm fisheye, around $300

http://www.google.com/search?q=samyang+8mm

you can use any reasonably wide lens, or a longer lens, but longer lens means more images to shoot, chance of stitching error, etc

look over the tuts i posted earlier, and have a look through panoguide forums for more info on shooting, stitching, etc

It arrived! I got the panoramic head in the mail today, going to do some testing tomorrow. Watch out for more questions!
