Debug mode ?

I think it's caused by google itself... to enable local running / testing. That's why you can delete / omit your map api key and everything still works... while local.

There were some posts about the "debug" mode being left on during some of the earlier betas... but I'm pretty sure those issues were with things showing up in the debug / info box that you can access by pressing O (not zero).

As you've seen though... once it's run from an online server... it's fine.

Klaus will have to confirm this though.
