Check Online/Offline status on iPad

Is there a way to check if someone has an online connection while viewing a tour on the iPad or not?
I've found the SWF plugin but I assume that this will work on desktop only.

The background is, I'm trying to find ways to optimize download packages for a specific reason.
One solution might(!) be, to provide a low resolution or single pano with the initial download to keep overall filesize small.
Only if people want to, they could download the entire package or, if they have a good connection, they can later view the content on demand while online.

First of all it's mandatory that it's working in Safari on iPad.

What about loading a 1x1 png from the Internet with a random query string and checking the loaded attribute?
Btw I seem to remember a newly added krpano variable for this. Check the docs.
